Tik Tok has evolved enormously in the last few years and is now one of the most popular forms of social media with almost 700 million users worldwide and is the 7th most used social media app in the world!

It has been very popular in China since its inception in 2016 where the app is known as 'Douyin'. The two apps look the same and are run by the same corporation (BydeDance), and though it remains similar to TikTok, Douyin has become more advanced than its global counterpart, particularly with respect to eCommerce. With three taps on Douyin, you can buy a product featured in a music video; you can book a stay at a hotel after watching a video filmed there; you can take virtual tours of a city’s stores and restaurants, get coupons for those establishments, and later post geo-tagged video reviews. Another big difference is the age of the user base, with Douyan having an older average than Tik Tok.

All of these reasons are why commercially Douyin is taken very seriously in China, especially in the influential travel industry.
